Artist Dana Clancy discusses the community and its impact on creativity as one the key inspirations behind her new series of paintings on paper made during the Covid-19 pandemic. In Fall of 2020, Clancy began painting on the pages of the New York Times during her weekly zoom meetings, making quick portraits and writing down significant bits of conversation. The paintings are palimpsests; headlines, images, and sentences from the news pages are painted over but rarely fully covered, a visible understory beneath the artist’s layered colors, gestural portraits, and transcribed pieces of dialogue between friends and colleagues.
